Old French Monequin), name of the son of Martin the Ape in Reynard the Fox, from Old Spanish mona 'mona monkey', shortening of mamona, variant of maimón, from Arabic ميمون (maimūn) 'monkey', literally 'blessed', used to ward off the monkey's bad luck.
