Recorded since c.1374, from Template:Xno[[Category:Template:Xno derivations|Librarian]] librarie, from Old French librairie "collection of books", a noun use of Latin adjective librarius "concerning books", itself from librarium "chest for books", from from liber "book, paper, parchment, originally the inner bark of trees", probably from a Proto-Indo-European base *leub(h)- "to strip, to peel"
