Old English hætt, from Proto-Germanic *xattuz (cf. North Frisian [[hat#Patrono:Frr|hat]], Swedish hatt), from pre-Germanic *kadnūs, from Proto-Indo-European *kadh- 'to cover' (cf. Latin cassis 'helmet', Lithuanian kudas 'bird's crest or tuft', Patrono:Ae xaoda 'hat'). Contrast with hood.
