EtymologyModificar

From German Hamster, from Old High German hamustra 'field-mouse', from Old Russian chomĕstorŭ, a tautological hybrid of the root of Russian khomiak 'hamster' and Baltic (cf. Lithuanian staras 'hamster').

Alternative Etymology traces Old High German hamustra, hamustro to Proto-Germanic *xamustrō(n-), xamustran- (hamster) from Proto-Indo-European *kam- (a kind of rodent), making it cognate to the Patrono:Chu word, and to Patrono:Lit [[kãmas#Patrono:Lit|kãmas]] (rodent, rat). Akin to Old Saxon hamustra (hamster).
